How to install Kali Linux is a step by step Kali Linux installation with screens for the Kali operation system using a VMWare virtual machine.
The first thing we need is to download Kali Linux, please use this link for downloading Kali Linux. I am using the installer version.
In this tutorial, we will download and install Kali Linux on a VMWare Virtual Machine. I will do another tutorial for downloading and using the live boot addition of Kali Linux. You can use a tool like uTorrent for the download. Using the torrent network.
How to install kali Linux?
Let’s set our VMWare to use our downloaded Kali Linux as the CDROM, and verify that we are booting from the CDROM.
VM configuration settings:
- Change the System Memory to 4GB, it was 758K. If you continue with the low memory, the installation shows you a low memory message. I did not try to install it using low memory.
- Change the Hard Disk size to 20GB, it was 8GB.
- Make sure you are selecting the Allocate all disk space now option.
This is the first screen that we see when we boot our Kali Linux VM system. For this guide, we are going to use the Graphical install option. Please select it and press enter to start.
In the next screen, we need to select a language. For this guide, we will be using the English language. If you want please change it to your language of choice. Once selected press the Continue button for the next step.
Please select your location for the Keli Linux installation. Once selected, please press the Continue button.
Now we need to configure our Keyboard. For this guide, I am using American English. Please select your own preferred keyboard. After selecting your keyboard, press the Continue button.
You will see a screen like the above, with some detection and configuration steps.
In this screen, we need to setup our system hostname. I am using kalivms as the hostname (this stands for kali virtual machine system). After setting the hostname, press the Continue button.
If your computer is part of a domain, like working company, school or high school, etc. Please add your domain name, if not you can press the Continue button without setting a domain name.
Now we need to ser our user name. This will be a non-root user, in Linux, we call the administrator user – root. With this user you will be able to log in and once needed you can change to root. Add your full name and press Continue.
In the next step, it will automatically use your first name as the login user. If you want you can change it to something else (like your nickname). With this name, you will be able to log into the Kali Linux system. Please set it and press the Continue button.
Now it is our time to set a password for our user. Set your password, then retype your password and press the Continue button.
Please select your time zone and press the Continue button.
Here we need to set the partition, as we use a VM with one Hard Disk all dedicated to Kali Linux, we will use Guided – use the entire disk. Select it and press the Continue button.
Select the disk you want Kali Linux to be installed on. Once selected press the Continue button.
Select the option you have here and press the Continue button.
It is showing you how it split the partition on the disk for the Kali Linux installation. Make sure to select the Finish partitioning and write changes to disk and press the Continue button.
On this screen, it asks you if you are sure to make the changes. as we are using a dedicated VM system, we are not changing our real system. Select the Yes option and press the Continue button.
Now the Kali Linux Installation Is Running.
On this screen, you can select your desktop environment. You can use the defaults or if you want select another graphical desktop like Gnome or KDE. I am using the default and pressing the Continue button.
Kali Linux Software Installation progress. Now it installs your selected software on your system. We are waiting for it to finish. It may take some time.
Using GRUB as the boot loader. This is a VM with only one operating system on it – Kali Linux – and we need a boot loader. Please select Yes and Continue the installation.
If you follow this guide, you have only one hard disk, select the /dev/sda and press the Continue button.
Changing the system settings before the system reboot. I recommended entering the VM settings and setting the CDROM to use the physical drive for the boot not to start from the CDROM. Once set, press the Continue in the installation screen.
I selected the Finish the installation options and press the Continue button. This brings me to the Kali Linux Installation Finish screen and it rebooted the system. The installation is finished. please press the Continue button to reboot the system.
After the reboot, the Kali Linux installation is done and you can set your selected user name and password to log into the system.
This is the end of our how to install Kali Linux guide, now the system is up and running and you can start using it. I will create another guide with some basic how to use Kali Linux in the near future.
Kali Linux Installation Failed Message:
If you see the above message during the installation, it might indicate that you need to change the settings, for me, when I saw this message I had to change the disk size from 8GB to 20GB for the installation to work. It may also be due to memory size.
At the beginning of this guide, I recommend the changes that I did in the VM settings.
